New research-backed evidence on benefits of Good Cause Eviction legislation
New legislation in Maryland would establish stricter requirements for landlords handling tenant evictions and property, requiring two weeks’ notice before executing eviction orders and giving tenants 10 days to reclaim possessions.
Tenants’ rights advocates demonstrated in Annapolis on Tuesday to urge state lawmakers to pass a bill designed to give renters more protections.
The Good Cause Eviction Bill would require landlords to state a valid reason for terminating or refusing to renew a lease in Maryland.
Renter advocates are hopeful that this will be the year “good cause” evictions finally become law in Maryland — but first it has to get past the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee, where it died last year after passing the House.
In a chilly lawyer’s mall, advocates made their voices heard as they pushed for good cause evictions.
“Hey hey, ho ho, retaliation has got to go,” chanted the supporters.
A bill before the general assembly would require landlords to provide an acceptable reason for not offering a lease renewal.
